Black Pine 1

I bought this Black Pine at the Swindon Bonsai Show in Feburary 2014 for £150:

The tree was very healthy and I liked the nebari and the thick trunk. The main faults with the tree where:

1. There where no branches in the middle of the tree to use

2. The bar branch at the base

3. The tree had heavy branches at the top

One solution would be to graft some branches onto the trunk. I have created a virt of what it could possibly look like:

Grafted branches

This does not solve the taper issue that the tree has.

The other possibility would be to create a literati style tree, something like this:

Literati

This is much quicker to achieve than to graft branches etc..

Black Pines from Seeds

On the 25 Febuary 2014 I took delivery of 400 Black Pine seeds. I boiled water and let it cool down a bit then put 100 seeds into the water and left them for 24 hrs.

The seeds that sunk I put into a moist sandwich bag with sphagnum moss and put in the fridge until the weather warms up

Trident Maple 2

Ok so I planted this Trident maple in July 2012.

The growth has been slow due to the fence falling on top of it at the end of 2012. I had to move it to where it sits now. I am growing out two sacrificial branches and will not prune at all this growing season.

And in the March 2014 buds started to swell so it was taken out of the small pot, and root pruned and planted into a growing bed. I planted it on top of a tile. I put a 3cms of fresh 60/40 compost/Cat Litter mix on top of the tile before sitting the tree on top and arranging the roots that where left. No ties where used to hold the roots down.

Will be carefully watered over the next few weeks as the weather warms up and also because the majority of roots are still over the tile and not down into the ground. I have also added a sprinkling of Blood n Bone to aid root growth.

I have also noticed the leaves have burnt and turned black. I am guessing its wind burn so I have covered with plastic tent
